Hi all,

I was thinking of some new lines/products for the New Year.

The first thing I was going to add was 'edible cake toppers' and the like, using the edible ink systems that are available - anyone use them and are they prone to blockages, what's the quality etc?

Also, I was thinking of getting a badge maker as we're asked all the time if we can make badges - anyone else got anything planned for 2012 as a new addition to their portfolio?

I always thought this was a strange combination - a dye subber and an edible topper(er), but it's amazing how many packages leave us with a pack of placemats and a pack of edible paper! We only support a range of Canon printers. The sweet smelling sheets though make the office smell like doughnuts :)

I have looked at both of these options as well - I was thinking of offering a kids party service, doing a themed cupcake or craft project party with the kids designing their own badges as well.
Funny though somebody said no one buys badges anymore but then I've not seen them anywhere to buy - but I think it would be a good promo line.
There are loads of people selling cake toppers on e-bay but I think I'd look more at the local market. The only thing that would put me off would be how often it would need to be used - would the sugar crystalize - I wonder if you could take the carts out and put in ones filled with glycerine or something if not being used often.

There's no sugar in the cartridges. The sweet tasting icing sheets are kept in a sealed back to preserve them.

I take it the sheets are in a bag that can be sealed between use Martin?

Also, what's the shelf life on the icing sheets before and after opening (i.e once opened have they got to be used within a certain date)?

Oh, and how many sheets are in a pack?

And lastly, how long is the shelf life on the ink - is there a shelf life once open and connected to the printer?

There is a useful forum dedicated to edible printing at http://bsguk.org/forum/index.php which has lots of posts relating to all sorts - might be worth looking at.

I can't recall the shelf lifes off the top of my head but the Decor Papers have a shelf life of at least 12 months (wafer paper might be closer to 24 months, but don't hold me to these as the office is closed and I don't have access to the labels which are on them) and there are 25 to a pack of each.. As for the inks, then this is around the same period.

Details of the papers are at

That's one for HMRC as to how they classify edible products - one is considered a confectionery item as it is sweet tasting, the other isn't. So one is vatable the other isn't.
