lmfao...ouch!

sorry, i answered this thread from seeing the first few posts, not realising it was 5 pages long. Just like Ian M above^^^use the eraser tool. much much easier. if you follow my instructions above you wont go wrong, in fact its impossible to mess this up.

another tip...make another copy of the bottom layer and then hide it, (so you now have 3 layers), the reason to hide the bottom layer is so that you have a master of the image, and then if you decide to go madder and mess things up, at least you have that master there to fall back on.

When your image is finished just delete that layer that you never used and then Flatten the image and save as a TIFF or a high res JPG.

Hope that helped

you're better off zooming in on intricate bits and erasing them rather than using the Wand tool or even the Magnetic wand tool (and make your eraser tool just a few pixels wide, i got down to 2 or 3 pixels sometimes), for me this can cause more problems than needed. You can also toggle the layers to see just what your erasing as well. with practice this method of colouring can be very creative indeed. remember to make a master layer and hide it so that you can always dupliacte more layers from it. Just hide it when not needed.

I hope the (totally bloody colourless cat) screen-caps helped a bit.

lol...btw...how are you printing this out? desktop printer or large format?

Actually either way your gonna get a problem because (to my knowledge) no printer can handle 2 colour profiles at once!!! Its either Greyscale or colour im afraid and of course you want this method of colour with black n white, so your black n white part might have a green cast over it, in fact it will. There is a little trick to use but it'll take experimenting and using lots of lovely expensive photo paper (if your desktop printing). You'll need to adjust your 2nd layer (the black n white one) so that your printer doesnt spit out lots of CMY to make an un-natural black. You have to goto your Image>adjustments>colour balance option and then decrease the Magenta/green slider by about 3-5%, slightly decrease the Cyan by the same as well, then flatten image etc and print.

It might be best to print your original file first to see how it looks and to see if theres a green cast where the black n white is, if so, try my options and tweek from there. Either which way, you'll never get true greyscale, but you can certainly tweek until your almost there.

Black n white (greyscale) printing is the bane of all printers. Just google for e.g. "why are my black and white images green" and you'll see enough there to confuse you forever :)

but do post your images here for us to see ok!!??

cheers

Thats helped alot thanks................but your last post has confused me more because I just assumed that once flattened and jpeg'd up (techical term!) than my ricoh would just print what its told to....ie, greyscale, then colour as required...... I'll give the print a go in a bit and report back!

forget my last bit, it was a bit technical if your a novice. just do as you said and print out your file, see what happens. If you get black n white with colour and no greenish cast for the black n white then you've got a decent printer. if you do have green then Ill try n help more.

Basically black n white is the worst colour to ever reproduce on both large and small format printers.
