Black Panel Mugs .............. overprint?
Re: Black Panel Mugs .............. overprint?
Hi all,
believe it or not I pressed my first black panel mug yesterday. I ordered all the types of mugs last year when we opened but I've swayed everyone towards 'standard' mugs since then.
Anyway, a quick read on the item description states:
"To print, simply make the image slightly larger than the white area (you won't see any over print on the mug as it is black) and press in your mug press for the normal time and temperature."
So, I did just that - I had a nice picture of a lion and tiger with a dark background that I'm using as a new demo picture for products. After pressing (and cooling etc) I had a look and saw that the image had overlapped the white area and had printed on the black area of the mug!
Now, we have florescent lighting in the shop so I can see every error (a right pain at times) but it still doesn't explain why the image was transferred to an area of the mug that should be non-sublimatable (have I just made a word up there?).
Anyone any experience in doing these?

This is what I mean, image below:

You can see that the image overlaps the white area but the image actually transferred onto the black also ???

Re: Black Panel Mugs .............. overprint?
The whole mug will have the polyester coating required for subbing onto. my thoughts would be to make your main image just a fraction smaller that the white area with a black border round it to make it just bigger then the white to allow for it to transition into the black of the mug.
Hope that makes sense.

It makes sense Andy, but I was under the impression that no image would be transfered to the black areas of the mug ................. as the description on the BMS website states:Draner;24169 wrote:The whole mug will have the polyester coating required for subbing onto. my thoughts would be to make your main image just a fraction smaller that the white area with a black border round it to make it just bigger then the white to allow for it to transition into the black of the mug.

If I have to now make an image to the exact specifications of the square, to 'allow' an over-print onto the black area it will be a nightmare if the artwork is not lined up correcty as the overprint will be off centre! To print, simply make the image slightly larger than the white area (you won't see any over print on the mug as it is black) and press in your mug press for the normal time and temperature.

Re: Black Panel Mugs .............. overprint?
I see what your saying Adam, The website states that you won't be able to see the over lap, not that it won't be there.
I can't make out in your picture if all of the image has bleed out into the black area of the mug or is it just the very dark area in the top there?

Re: Black Panel Mugs .............. overprint?
Yeah - you can see it .................. it stands out to be honest.
Ref the bleed, if you look at the lions foot you can see that the printy is much lighter but it is still bleeding onto the black area (and the lion colour is very light).
On the side you cannot see (I can take another picture if you want) there is a tiger and the stripes of the tiger are showing up on the black area also.

Re: Black Panel Mugs .............. overprint?
I could be wrong but I'd have thought the whole of the mug would have a sub coating - but to get a good result you'd need an overprint (bleed) of around 2-3 mm of black on your image to make it blend with the mug.
Could be wrong though as I've never used them.

Please feel free to upload some more photos but I think I am at the limit of how much help I can be. the best thing I can say at the moment is, unless Martin can offer some advice on here over the weekend I will have a chat with him on Monday and come back to you.
I wish i could be of more help.

Re: Black Panel Mugs .............. overprint?
I don't think you're wrong John
Andy, no problem - thanks for replying ................although I think that the description on the BMS site should be ammended to avoid confusion, to explain that a bleed will occur if your print is slightly larger than the white area so ensure that the overlap/bleed is the same on each side to help with blending.

Thanks Adam, I will have a chat with Martin on Monday regardless of what happens over the weekend, and see if we can review the info on the website.
