10oz / 11oz mugs - how much difference??

I've recently tested a couple of Coralgraphs mugs. Quality wise they were very good but didn't stand up well to a dishwasher test. Henry is, I believe, looking into this at the moment as these particular mugs should have been dishwasher proof.

We have 11oz as well as the European mugs (these are closer to 10oz).

The European Mugs are closer to 10oz and we also have 11oz. There isn't a proper definition of what constitutes a 11oz or 10oz mug, but the 11oz mug really came into the market from China when TAMS stopped producing their mugs (which were generally considered to be a 10oz version). The 10oz are slightly lighter than the 11oz (handle less pronounced, about 2mm difference in height, possibly thiner ceramic body), but in terms of volume of liquid held, the difference is negligible (so it's not 11 fluid oz v 10 fluid oz). That said there are variations of a 10oz mug - some are 93mm tall (like the European mugs we sell), some can be 90mm tall.

As for dishwasher safe mugs it always best to test these thoroughly. We've had lots of mugs from different suppliers in over the years and all have been "dishwasher safe" according to the manufacturers. These are mugs from China as well as Europe. The acid test is to put them in a dishwasher and wash them repeatedly - you'll soon find out if they are "dishwasher safe" or not. I believe John G has something on his website about different coatings on mugs and how they fair in dishwashers.

Absolutely - probably limited to the cost of the mug. It all depends on who is the original manufacturer. All I'm saying is that many companies that manufacture mugs (not the distributors in the UK) give assurances that their mugs are dishwasher safe and when it transpires that they start to flake/fade the original manufacturer says "sorry they are okay in our dishwasher". The acid test to any claim is to either test the mugs yourself in a dishwasher over a period of time or, if time doesn't permit, investigate the assertion of the distributor to find out how the dishwasher safe claim has been achieved.

This is a good point. Are mugs consistent with the quality? I ask this because of the 'B' grade BMS mugs, I know some members had issues with the BMS mugs and this was down to the white spot problem. Surely it is down to the supplier to ensure each batch of mugs has consistent quality before they can claim that the mugs are dishwasher proof. Personally I pay no attention to dishwasher safe.

I see BMS are now stating that they are the only company to offer a 12 month dishwasher guarantee on all RN coated products, does this mean if a customer comes back withink the 12 months and the mug is faded it will be replaced? It would be interesting to hear the details of this Martin.
