Re: Polyester .................. 50/50 - 60/40 - 100%

So,

a couple of questions if I may please fellow DSF warriors.

1. What content is reccommended for a good transfer using sublimation (i.e what percentage of polyester is good).

2. Can everything that is 100% ployester be sublimated? I only ask as I have a gymbag that is 100% polyester so I was going to try sublimating to it ............... would it work, will it wash out ...........?

3. If the content of ployester is low (as an example 60% ployester and 40% cotton), and providing sublimation works, would you up the time/temp/pressure to take account of this?

Many thanks guys - again, it's something that I could play around with myself and ruin a couple of bags and t-shirts getting the answers but someone has probably done it already and have the answers.

This is one of the reasons I donate to the forum, as not having the answers would cost me a few quid getting them - if someone has the answer then I donate the couple of quid to the forum ................. everyone's a winner!

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but for the best results you need a minimum of 70% polyester content.

100% polyester shouldn't be a problem, though not sure if you'd need to decrease temp/time on those.

1. 100% is best for best results.
2. as far I know yes. I sublimated on gym bag too and looked great.
3.No. if there is only 60%, 75% or 80% only this amount of polyester will be printed. I printed sweatshirt with amount of 70% ployester and it looked like been washed 100's times :) no good imo.

With a polyester blend you will only get the ink taking to the polyester. If it is 40% cotton for example, after the first wash 40% of the material will no longer have the ink embedded. I have printed a 100% cotton tee in the past as a one off and it looked great. The first time it washed there was then hardly anything left on it. Did the job for the only time it was needed to be worn though. It's not just polyester but certain other man made fibres that sublimation will take to...... as long as it can withstand the heat.

I have used 60/40 poly regularly and it works fine, as for 40% getting washed out I can say it has never happened.

You must have a decent tight knit on the material. I don't see a problem with 70/30 60/40 blends as plenty of colour will stay in the shirt. The cotton won't hold the ink though so whatever percentage is cotton goes back to pre-printed after washing a few times. The vibrancy of the ink will still be there in the polyester.
