Sorry danlad, didn't mean it to sound quite like that - all I meant was your not giving away a full studio session worth 100's / 1000's of pounds - you selling a product with a good photo on, which you take, and its included in the price.

pricing is always a funny subject and a very controversial one
some ppl say sell cheap and have a quick turnaround
others say charge what the product is worth
others say you are selling a quality product and sell at a high quality price

it really depends on what you want to achieve
i sell my mugs for £5.99 and to be honest i fell thats right
others will argue and some will agree but we all set our prices how we feel its right

at the minute i am selling coasters, mugs and sub T's
i'd like to do more but money is an issue

i also have a good quality camera but am still learning to use it
i've joined a local camera club and am hoping to get some good tips

i think what your doing is brill as you have a good audience and customer base already set up

how i work prices out is work out the price of materials etc, so mug, paper, ink
then think right each mug costs me say £2.50 to make
double it and thats my price
that £2.50 profit won't cover my hourly rate but hey the more i do the more my name gets around and the more i do the better i will become

and the better i become the quicker i'll be at doing the job so my time will be less eventually

complicated i know lol but hope it helps

Yes, but it won't cover wear and tear either, that why you do your homework and work out your hourly rate - basic business planning.

you quite right here John but problem is that people see the guy with "big" camera and think that he can take pro photos. When he start take pictures for free and sell them on the mug for £5 or £10 people start complain about photographer charging £150-£200 for photos. as they dont understand the skils and quality of photograph.

You do have a point Paul but a quality photographer charging up to £200 wouldn't be taking a photo shoot in a shopping complex, or wherever Danlad trades from, where it would be quite hard to maintain accurate lighting and shadows - perfect for model type photography.

I think Paul, as you're a keen photographer yourself, you're a little touchy about this subject - just as I am when topics come up about printing, and business, from people selling for beer/pocket money out of their bedrooms.

I think you are undervaluing my skills Paul. I have been doing the photography for over 2 years now and have sold alot of products, I have a set of quality Elinchrom lights and know how to use all my equipment. I'm not the guy with the "big" camera that does not have a clue. stop throughing your templates out your pram. Thats not why i started this thread.

I've come to this forum for help with dye sub not photography.

I don't think I am though, I think I offer a service most people can afford. People can come back to me each year as it only costs £50 for a 16x20 canvas and not £300 say. I am happy with my profit and happy to put a smile on people's faces when they see their little Johnny on their canvas.

I would rather sell X amount of canvases per week and let the customer know what they are getting rather than a few, studios seem to offer all these great deals like free sitting free8x10 but then you need a mortgage to pay for good stuff.

I have a small family and I could not afford the prices a studio charges, I know that much.

And do you mean calm down or come down, where is it you want me to come? To your studio, How much do you sell your images? How much is a canvas from you?
