Mugs in the post? Best method.
Re: Mugs in the post? Best method.
Hi all. I have been asked to supply a car club with some mugs that they can sell on to their members. how do I post them? I've seen some polystyrene mug post boxes. Would it be an idea to get some of these and put each mug into one and then pack in a box and post to them? I can add a bit on to each mug to cover the extra cost of these boxes, this way they get a postage box to forward the mugs on and I dont have the worry of a box of mugs turning up at the customers broken. It may seem I've answered my own question here, but I'd appreciate anymore information on these poly boxes and other ways of posting mugs.
Thanks in advance Steve

Polystyrene mug boxes are *the* only way to go. You can order singles or a 6 pack mug box from BMS. If I'm supplying multiples (more than 12) I generally pack them back in the packing crate and send that out. I also sent cardboard presentation boxes along with them so that they have the polystyrene box to protect them and the card box for show.

Polystyrene mugs boxes are ideal for 10oz Durham mugs, but not really suitable for anything else. "Smashproof" boxes are way too heavy, but they will fit all manner of different kinds of mugs and other items.
Really, though, it comes down to what the client wants (do they want individual packing, and does that packing need to be safe for posting?) and how many you're doing.
I ship individual mugs in polystyrene mug boxes. If I'm shipping 6 or more, they go in the 6-way polystyrene boxes. If I'm shipping 30 or more, I aim to reuse the box the mugs came in (if the packing is strong enough - which isn't always the case) or I'll pack in individual card boxes inside a strong packing box.

Thanks for the avice, I'll have a look round and see what I can find. I applogise for not saying thanks sooner, but some young 'chav' decided to park his car rather heavily into the telephone pole feeding my house so we have been without phone or web access for a day or so.

Surprised you find these too heavy. Whenever I have used them they don't alter the psotage cost. Which ones do you use?

The ones from subli-supplies.
It's not that they're too heavy when you post a single mug, but they are when you post two or three together because they push the weight beyond the next level.
Posting 2 mugs together is about 600g in polystyrene boxes, but around 800g (the next level) with smashproof boxes.
It gets worse when posting three mugs together because it pushes the weight over 1Kg, which also means you can no longer post by 2nd class if that's what you sometimes do. Three mugs can be posted in polystyrene boxes by 2nd class for under 1Kg, which costs £2.84. But in smashproof boxes, the weight is now 1.2Kg (and, if you're not careful, it can tweak over 1.25Kg which is the next price level), which costs you £4.50 (or £5.20 if it goes over 1.25Kg) by 1st class because 2nd class is no longer available. That's can be almost double the postage costs just for using smashproof boxes.
Back when these boxes were first introduced, they were introduced as marvellous little 2-mug boxes but they were discontinued by subli-nation in favour of the single-mug boxes which then transferred over to subli-supplies. I wish they'd sell the 2-way ones again. I'm not in this business to line the Royal Mail's pockets.

I always use the european sized mugs and poly boxes from BMS and never use the smashproof boxes.
I would say they've never let me down but that's just tempting fate for the next batch to arrive all smashed

I see. I've never weighed multiples together. If I send a few I use a courier and it costs me £2.95 + vat for a bag which can fit 12 mugs (at a squeeze). Singles go RM. I'll have a weigh of my boxes and also the polybox as I thought there couldn't have been much difference in them.

how do you pack polyboxes??? in the cardbord box?? or just tape it round and post it?
