Getting started with sublimation - Apple Mac Compatibility

Do you already have photoshop? If not the a new Windows laptop is probably cheaper to buy.
There are free or cheaper software packages that will do the job of photoshop. Affinity is 33% off at the moment.

Thanks, this is one of the options that I have been exploring, however it would make sense to avoid adding a completely different operating system and reduce complications if at all possible

I understand your reluctance to use a different OS if you've only ever had experience of MacOS, but look at it this way...

If I was buying a sublimation printer I wouldn't choose Canon, simply because they don't work with sublimation inks, even though I've always used Canon printers in the past.

It's the same with your Mac. It doesn't support custom ICC's, essential for sublimation printing, so it's off the list, no matter how much you prefer Mac computers.

We choose what we need to get the job done, not what we would would wish to get the job done.

So am I right in understanding from what you are saying, that the custom ICC’s are not possible to install or set up in to a program such as Adobe Photoshop or Affinity and therefore it is the case that the operating system controls the settings output by a printer regardless of what program or application the command is coming from?

You can certainly install ICC profiles but whether or not they are ignored is anyone's guess. Colour management in Apple Mac's has been an ongoing problem for many years.Hence the announcement on the Ink Experts site regarding withdrawal of support for Apple Mac's. They're in the job of selling printers and consumables and wouldn't do this on a whim.

If you have a mac, photoshop and icc, dont worry. crack on. it will work lovely.
PM me and i will send you colour settings for photoshop

At the very worst, if it doesn't work with your setup, then all you need to do is replace the Mac with a cheap Windows machine, which will also run your cutter as well, so no worries there.

So I've gone ahead and ordered a printer, once it arrives I will have a play and see what I can uncover in terms of its compatibility with mac, and as a worst case scenario I'll pick up a cheap Windows machine. I'll report back with my findings once I've spent some time working everything out. Thank you to everyone who has been kind enough to offer advice!

I'm lead to believe though that the latest Catalina updates are preventing the use of custom ICC profiles. I don't know the full details but it's pretty terminal apparently.

So how do you use your Icc on Mac? What software do you use to print from?
Got to Library > Colorsync > Profiles and see if you have any there. If you do, your mac is using them. Don't forget any printer you use. Comes with drivers and that's what is using icc profiles.
So please check in your printing software if you can set them.
