I know the preferred machine for putting edges on fabric badges and patches is the Merrow MG 3U machine, but does anyone use a regular overlock machine for edging these items?

I have a Toyota overlocker with the upper blade moved out the way and a fabric guide attached to the bottom blade. Whilst the results are close, I'm not sure whether to pursue this further or whether a regular overlocker is just not suitable for this task. Not sure if it down to needing lots more practise, or if a regular overlocker will ever achieve acceptable results.

If anyone has experience of this type of fabric edging, any help, guidance, or suggestions would be gratefully received. Have looked on the net, but can't really find any decent info.

before christmas i did a one off patch for a lady, pressed onto denim fabric, i edged it with my home machine on the overlocker stitch, i went round twice, i was happy with the result, although it was in no way as good as the pre-bought fabric patches i use, but in this instance, as a one off it was fine, and the lady was happy - which is the main thing

Are you using ordinary thread or Bulk Overlock thread. The second option gives a thicker coverage. I'll ask Chris when he comes in from work (he's an ex sewing machine engineer) if this is possible. Would be good if it was I have a 4thread industrial overlock sitting doing nothing.

Using bulk thread in upper looper only at moment, but have had it in both loopers too. Am using machine with just three theads, with left needle removed to create a narrower border.

I had a close up look at the merrow machine and despite its high cost, it just appears to be a three thread overlocker with the blade replaced with a raised metal plate to guide the fabric.
