Re: Pressing hi viz t shirts and hoodies

Post by mr-gobby »

I know from experience that when pressing hi vis vests the yellow florescence comes out and makes a mess with the press, does anyone know if this is the case with t shirts polos and hoodies which are similar colour but different material. I've had an order for some orange polos and hooides, ones with the hi vis tape on them and bit concerned I'll contaminate my press again! Took ages to get rid of the yellow last time!!

Thanks in advance - Mark

I have just pressed a load and instead of using Teflon I covered the base and top with some old sheets I had cut to size. This seems to have done the trick. I must admit they were bright yellow by the time I had finished and haven’t needed to press anything since.

T-shirts and Polos will be different and not make a mess as they are made differently. Vests tend to made very cheaply so there is always lots of loose threads. The hoodies I print are also made to a high standard so do not mult as much either but some do.

You are never going to remove all the crap that hi vis garments create. There are two ways you can combat it though.

You can either set up a special machine just to handle hi vis

Or if that is not an option get yourself some air canister sprays or an air gun. Once you have finished printing you will need to air blow every single part of the machine to get rid of all the excess.

I also recommend you use a white t-shirt on the base platen which you can throw away once finished. This will protect your rubber sheet from becoming contaminated.

If either the platen or the base plate become contaminated with hi vis "gunk" I recommend increasing the temperature of your press to 190-200 and pressing any old rubbish you can find and wiping the platen after each press. The very high temperature tends to remove the gunk leaving you with a nice clean press.

It also helps if you are in a ventilated area which keeps the dust moving.

Problem isn't as bad with t-shirts, polos and hoodies, but still exists. Worse when you sublimate onto them as the temperature is higher causing the dye in the fabric to gas.

Always use a piece of pressing paper over the top with any high vis, or even football tops.

I have a pack of chip paper, you can buy similar from removal/packaging places, and use that as a throwaway barrier, I also keep the backing paper from all of my paper transfers which are A3 and over and use two of those sandwiched together (ink to ink) as a barrier.

All went okay I used low temp quick press vinyl and cut a tee shirt in half, laid one on press table an other over top of items and seems to have worked, they were yoko polos and hoodies and tbh i didnt have anything like the issues ive had with vests in the past though id like to install a dedicated hi vis press at some point just in case
