Re: Recommendations for Public Liability insurance ?,
Most insurers will offer an all inclusive package that will include premises, equipment, stock, product and employers and public liability insurance. One payment per month, and as long as you have been honest with them about what you are doing then there is no argy bargy about whether you are covered or not.
You might save a few pounds if you shop around but I doubt it will be enough to make it worth the effort.

there are many 'retail packages' that bundle together lots of things much cheaper than buying separate.
MOST retail packages DO NOT include events/fairs/car boot/ markets so check your small print!

For outdoor events you can join the National Market Traders Federation, but that won't cover you for retail premises, and probably won't cover any 'light industrial' onsight production either. The NMTF is getting pricey now - it was £26 pa when I first joined.
Most insurance brokers will be able to add event cover to your retail package for less than NMTF cover.

I've got a handy tip to save yourself a fortune on rates and insurance.
Move your customer counter right up to the very front of the shop. 90% of the shop whatever, should have no access to the public. When the rates people come to measure up, they look at public space. Friend of a friend ignored this advice, got landed with a massive bill and eventually went bust!

Good idea if you are going to have a small showroom/counter area and a large workshop area. Rates can be crippling at nearly 50% of rent. Look for something that qualifies for small business rate relief. Also look out for ( and avoid if possible) Business Improvement Districts. BIDS attache a mandatory levy on the rates, and in most cases they provide very little other than a 40K+ salery for the BID chairman.
