Re: New Unisub Coasters

Post by Jimbo »

Just received a couple of samples of the new Unisub coasters from Xpres, which go by the name of Scandinavian.

They're 90mm square like the usual ones but have a matt finish instead of gloss and the backing is a much lighter colour more like the colour of sand.

Anyway I've printed them and they do look very good and not being glossy they don't show up fingerprints etc. like the glossy ones do.

Sounds promising, no issues with the back leaving tape marks either?

I couldn't see any tape marks.
They also sent a couple of the usual glossy ones which I printed at the same time and there were no visible tape marks.

Due to stock issues with our normal coaster supplier we have gone back to Unisub coasters and must admit the tape mark issue has hopefully been resolved as a lot less prominent now. Not too sure on these matt coasters though as the gloss surface really helps artwork pop-up.

I printed both the glossy and the matt at the same time and each one has it's appeal.
I would describe the matt one more as a satin matt, a bit similar to the satin mug that Listawood do.
The matt one doesn't show up reflections or fingerprints.

Tape backing issues has been fine for a while now... they decided to change the backing once again which in turn resolved the problem so all good with Universal Woods (for now).

They better not think about phasing out the glossy coasters now... they account for 90% of my overall business.

I might try the matt, it can look tasteful.

As for the back ripping, I would recommend the Xpres 6006 tape as it is less tacky and press with some kitchen roll to absorb all the moisture.

I prefer matt on everything personally.

Now, if we can get Unisub to make matching place mats that don't warp!!

Justin my Unisub placemats no longer warp - 190/70 then flip with paper for 35 seconds. Remove paper then face up under a box for 1 hour. if placing under a box of mugs make sure to use some sort of paper between the box and placemat to avoid markings going onto the face of the mat. You don't even need to place under the box afterwards but i like to just to be sure.

I'll have another go with them after years of not being able to print the blooming things. Putting them under a weight should never need to be an option but if like you say they no longer need it all the better.

Surely they'll introduce 'matt' place-mats to compliment the coasters then? I've not even seen the new coasters yet.

...anyone want to sell me a few placemats to test? ;-)
