Hey guys!

Happy to be accepted onto the forums.

Just recently purchased a Sawgrass SG400 sub printer, working good so far. I was going to purchase the SG800 because of the larger printing ability, but monetary needs determined otherwise lol!

I was previously used to vinyl cutting, but thought sublimation would open up far greater possibilities in garment decoration. I love that I can print intricate designs straight from Illustrator onto my garments, rather than having to layer and assemble 27 (exaggeration) different sheets of vinyl for one image.

I do have a question though (hopefully I can ask this here, rather than opening a new thread elsewhere) those of you that do have the smaller format printers, how do you go about producing larger images? Would you split the design on to different artboards, print and then press them all separately, hopefully lining up the edges? This is the only workaround I can envision. Hopefully someone experienced can give me some input.

Well, there are ways of splitting large images to tile them onto the likes of t-shirts, but the software tends to be expensive for what it does.

Take IC-Split from Forever for instance. Over $400 to do something that could be done in Illustrator or Photoshop with the basic tools! The hardest part is determining where your split line will be, but here's a tip:

Download the Demo version of IC-Split. It prints a watermark over the images but we're not going to be concerned with that. Load in an image, let the software spilt it using it's algorithms, then simply use the same split line to split by hand in, say, Photoshop, with the pen tool.

You sublimation prints will have to be on clear film so that you can align them when pressing.

Thank you for your reply. $400 is insane! To be honest, it does sound like I could get away with it in Photoshop or Illustrator. I'll play around and see what I come up with. I knew it was going to be a drawback with the SG400 but, needs must and all that

Hi Krice and welcome to the forum.

I#m assuming you don't print much above A4 hence your purchase of the 400 printer, if it's just occasional A4+ work it might be worth getting someone to print the transfers and post to you? Plenty of us on here that could help and we have a member/member section to request such a thing

Yes, I'm rather limited I'm afraid with the 400. Somewhat of a small regret, but ho hum. That's a great idea actually. Thank you very much for the help.
