I've seen this kit advertised on MDP Supplies: http://www.mdpsupplies.co.uk/doming.asp
I was almost tempted - but my partner said no...something about me being childish and doming anything and everything (I'm not going to deny it...I probably would )

You don't need to make them, they're called cabochons and can be sourced from jewellery suppliers - available in resiny rubber type stuff, or hard acrylic and glass
Some are already supplied with an adhesive layer, others you need to use glue with.

Sublimetals and KYD Products both sell adhesive domes for this sort of thing.

Don't buy too many in one go if you've not used them before.

I was a bit disappointed when I first used them. The dome looks nice but it does make the print look a little dirty. The dome can also show up the adhesive marks on the underside and minor imperfections only show up once you've fitted them to the cufflink.

While domes give a classic look to the cufflink have plain metal gives a more modern and crisp look.

But I guess it depends on the market you aim for.
