Re: Email addresses setup through Google...confused!

Post by Justin »

I took over a domain and the previous owner setup an email address for me. I know where the domain is listed but the email addresses aren't set up on there.

When he set the new addy up the email came through Google GSuite, is it possible it was setup through Google? I access the email address with Gmail settings so maybe that answers my own question!

The previous owner still has email addresses setup and actually emailed me through one today. I can't gain access to his account as he didn't set up direct on the domain reg site.

This has been even more confused than usual ;-) Anyone help me with this please?

Have you bought the domain form the previous owner, or just renting it?

If you bought it, then why is the previous owner still having an email on it? Are you renting him an email address?

You can register a domain, lets say with GoDaddy (as example). You can then change the Nameservers and have these pointing to another host (say 123-reg as example) where you host the site files and can host the emails. You can also change another domain setting to host email elsewhere.

Is the domain in your name?

Ah! DNS Server redirect, completely forgot about that! I bet that's what they've done.

Haha...oh, you just edited after I'd read :-). Your first response was fine my friend. We had a good reason for leaving him with an email address but no longer required.

Many thanks, off to found DNS details now.

Excellent :)

Have a look at the DNS settings, and check the MX ones as well. You can set the MX records to Googles ones (for use with Gmail). Some hosts have a 'one click and its done' solution, others needs manual intervention.

If you're wanting to set it all up where you host the domain, just click reset, and the mail will now be back with your host.

If you can get into the cpanel, and he hasn't deleted them, yes!

Depends if when he set it up to access them, he left a copy on the server. You should be able to see this under your storage stats, as to how much is being used in email. If its been deleted on server, then the answers no.

If the mailbox is still there, then you should be able to reset password and log in.

If the emails aren't there, and you think anything else commercially worthwhile may come through, then delete his mailbox and set up a catch all for all unrouted mail.
