So I got one of these for a cap order we got a few months back and have subsequently got a ton of orders since, Snapbacks be popular!
Anyways so this thing is a proper pain in the arse. The odd shape of the platen results in a lot of marked caps that need to go in the "things to wear when its raining" cupboard and simply cant be sold - because of the way the metal curved points mark the cap material extremely easily.
So I was thinking, if I could take just under an inch off of the platten curved ends, here:
Then it would actually be a decent press.
I think that platen shape is just steel going by the way it feels weight wise etc but before I try to take the thing apart, I was wondering if anyone had done something similar? If it's hollow in there, then obviously it's a waste of time - if there is circuitry or wiring there, again - can't be done.
Any ideas/suggestions welcome.

Re: Cap Press - Considering Hardware Modification
Im going to suggest you change the shape of the bottom platten. Fold a kids t-shirt and lay it over the plattern and keep trying until you find the right shape. Usually the middle will need to be higher than the outside.
I have exactly the same problem with mine and this is the solution I found.

I modified the bottom, - took the edges off the rubber and made a bit smaller.
You might be able to file a bit off the corners of the top HOT bit, don't know how deep in the element is, but I wouldn't take much off!

I do what Earl says, and I also fine that using the spring clip that holds the cap in place is vital, you really need to tug the cap snugly into place then it is fine.

I've used this press and found using a strong clamp either side at the back held the cap in place. This worked for me
