Re: Metal Key ring problem

Post by nibz33 »

Hi,
A couple of weeks ago I thought I'd have a crack at printing some metal key rings so I purchased a few samples and they printed great and looked like a quality product. They are the rectangular type that use a 3M self adhesive tape to stick the printed piece of metal into the body of the key ring.
I printed a sample out for myself to make sure that the metal stayed in place and sure enough after a few days the printed section fell out.
I'd be grateful to know anybody else's experience of these type of key rings, is there a difference in quality between suppliers as they all look exactly the same? I see a lot for sale on fleabay and amazon etc so either I've purchased a suspect batch or some sellers don't mind bad feedback.
Cheers,
Dave

make sure there is not a thin cover over the key ring itself, so you are sticking to the metal of the body. a wipe over with some panel wipe might help, or get yourself a roll of trim tape like car body shops use as quite often the stuff they send with them is not that good.

Maybe a few dabs of super glue or epoxy adhesive would make a longer lasting bond. Saying that, I've used aluminium inserts on bag holders and pill boxes and the tape has held up fine, but keyrings probably get more use and abuse.

Always use three small drops of super glue before placing the insert into the keyring (after peeling off the sticky strip). Top Secret - We use Loctite precision max for exactly this.

Thanks mrs maggot, webtrekker and uk printed mugs. This forum never fails to surprise me with how helpful people are, as soon as I've got a bit of experience under my belt I hope I can help as much.
I'll try your suggestions and see what improvement it makes.

Hi UK Printed,
By the way, call me thick if you want, but did you mean that you completely remove the 3M S/A tape and rely on the Loctite precision to hold it in place or do you just peel away the protective paper and put the loctite onto the self adhesive tape. I'm doing some tests today so I might try both. I promise to keep your secret safe!!!
Cheers,

Remove the strip so the metal keyring is sticky but then apply 3 small drops of glue in the middle in a line BUT away from the edge. It has to be away from the edge otherwise the glue will seep out when the metal insert is squashed down.

A few weeks of testing have passed now and I can confirm that a quick wipe over of the back of the metal using isopropyl alcohol and 3 drops of glue have produced keyrings that stay in one piece. Once again thanks for all the help.
