Call me a cynic, but I just don't buy the fact that this was done by a dishwasher.

I doubt there is much you can do except send them another mug as customer service is a priority, but if it were me I would send them a self addressed box to return the mug for inspection. You will be able to tell straight away if it was done in a dishwasher or not.

I have seen mugs with the patchy mottling and if it was all like the outer area I would say it is the coating breaking down under high temp washing. The strange bit is the part where it looks like it has been burnt by a flame....... which is all I can assume it is. Can't imagine how else that mark appeared.

Longforte mugs. Same ones I've been using for quite a while. The worrying thing is I did 30 of these for him, although none of his customers have complained to him and they were sold 3 weeks ago. I'm testing one in my neighbour's dishwasher to see what happens. There is another mug on the right of the picture, that appears to be badly faded, I'm wondering if his dishwasher is getting too hot.

I think someone has microwaved something very sugary in them, and its boiled over on the one on the right, and has burned through the coating.

Test mug is back from my neighbour's dishwasher, it was a slight misprint from the same order, so everything will be the same. It went through two washes and a lot of the black has turned brown. No "flame" marks though. Will get photo up tomorrow.
