Re: Hi newbie ready to quit already :(

Post by pennz26 »

Hi I'm nee to sublimation , I've brought a ricoh sg3110dn printer and it came with fotorite inks in a refillable cartridge pack, It also came with a mug press and sub paper.i brought these from cityink express. I brought some mugs from ebay, pixmax sub mugs. Now my problems are never ending, the colours don't come out bright, they look faded and when I put the onto the mug they look worse. I have an icc profile which hasn't helped one bit and I'm now ready to give up and bin the whole lot. I haven't managed to get a single mug done that looks half decent. Any advise or help will be lovely as I hate quiting but this has done me lol. I think I'll stick to my silhouette from now
Thanks for listening to me ramble on but I'm at a total loss with the whole thing xx

Hi, I've tried 180oc and 180 and that doesn't work I've tried about 10 different other temp and time combos, the colours don't look right when there printed and also seem a little blurry, my blacks are more greyish brown and that's before going into the press, I've tried with and without the colour profile sent to me by city ink. Also when I do press my mugs the center of the mug looks over cooked as it's slightly more faded than else where. I could go on and on lol :'(

Are those inks sublimation inks? I thought that the Ricoh needed gel inks to work. The press may not have an even temp, I am guessing that it is an unbranded Chinese press.
These may be few of your issues. Have you had a good look through the forum as there are many posts on here concerning what inks should be used with this printer, normally Sawgrass inks using the Sawgrass ICC Profile called powerdriver.

Get a large cup of coffee and have a good read.
Many thanks
Iain

Equipment used A4 Ricoh printer, HP3085 Heat Press Graphtec cutter, Jarin mug press, CJV 30-60 solvent printer and lots of help from DSF.

Hi,
Yes they do say sublimation gel inks on them, and I think the press is just a cheap one they throw in with the set they sell, I paid £300 for the whole lot which makes me think that maybe it's not the best set up ever but thought that it might just do me to learn. (All its done is give me a massive headache). I'll make that coffer when the kids are in bed and have a look through. It's just so frustrating when I can't do something. I currently work with vinyl and I thought that I'd branch out into sub as it open the door to more possibilities as I'm constantly thinking of new stuff. Thanks for the advise :)

If the profile is making no difference then it may not be setup properly. What software are you printing from? Were you given specific setup details for the printer config and software?

I'm using windows 8 and photoshop c4 I've followed the instructions they sent me, some of the setting on my printer are different as the disk I got with the printer didn't work in my laptop, so had to go to the ricoh website and download the the manual and power drive from there. Maybe it's not the right one or maybe I'm just not computer savvy enough to have done it properly. I'm clueless

This is when a supported route is preferable as it can be a struggle getting up and running with a system...we'll get you there though I'm sure :-) Personally I think Windows 8 is horrible and stick to Windows 7...but I digress.

I'm going to PM links to 3 PDF files so that you can check everything through.

Thank you, it's not as easy as I thought it would be lol, and I think my hubby's laptop runs on windows 7 so I'll try that too, I'm so glad I've found this forum as nobody I know has a clue about sublimation, think that's a reason I wanted to get into it as the area I live in hasn't really got anywhere apart from retailers that do these mugs
