I use gimp. I started with it and got great results. I find it easier to use as I found PS over engineered ways to do things that Gimp did with one click. I'm not saying I dont use photoshop as a lot of my templates are PS only. I just find myself opening up gimp first for the more basic of duties.
Have you tried the gimp forums?
Gimp graphic design software
Re: Gimp graphic design software
Is GIMP fully colour managed yet? - last time it was discussed it wasn't, which would be my first reason to not even consider it for serious print use.
I've read a few reviews of it, including comparisons of the pros and cons of it vs PS, and the consistent message was that PS is best, but GIMP is good because it's free.
PS is less than £10 a month, which isn't really a lot to budget for if you're serious about your business.
Both programmes are different, and so the question is, if you're serious about your business is do you want to spend your time leaning the industry standard programmes which will then serve you well for the long term, or spend your time learning something that most pros in graphics/printing do not know or use?
