Looking at the press apart from a heat mat problem the only other thing I can think of is the closing mechanism, which you say is pneumatic, is somehow causing either a tightening or slack spot on closing. I would put money on it being the heat mat though.

Yep. looks like it. I suspected the same so tried adding more tape so that the whole design was flat.

I had a similar problem with some mugs recently I leave the mugs on a radiator so the base heats , i put them in my press when its at idle temp and the press then cools down as the mugs is cooler, i press for 180 at 180C but the counter does not start till the temp hits 180 . Make sure the mug is in hte centre of the press and make sure the press is not TOO TIGHT you shold be able to just rotate the handle with force .

tried that, tried that, tried that. I'm on my 4th brand of mugs, 3rd brand of paper just waiting for a response from the mug press people as I've asked for a new heat mat or replacement press.

I've preheated the base, preheated the whole mug, pressed it upside down...

Yesterday I knocked three out and all were perfect. Today 4 blurry ones in a row after a perfectly good one.

Try wetting the paper just dampen it then put a plain sheet of paper or teflon over it and press

Are you soaking the mugs after sublimation or letting them cool in the air? I used to dunk but now leave them to cool on their own but after 5-10 mins when you take the paper off, you need to do it in one hit like a plaster, otherwise if too hot you can get blurs

How can it be the heat mat when he says he has tried two different mug presses. They surely wouldn't have the same issue in the same place
