Re: Stickers, cutting and application

Post by paul 44 »

Hi folks,

Looking for a few pointers, I have a possible job where stickers are required to be put inside car windows, obviously this needs to be a case of cutting and applying it to the rear window.

I was looking at gloss sign vinyl from MDP supplies and I believe this would require application tape? I have never done these before and was hoping it would be a case of cutting it, weeding it and sending out to the customers then they just peel off the backing and stick it onto a screen, easy peasy.

Anyone know of a better/easier method?

Thanks

I am guessing that when you say stickers you mean a single colour logo or text? If so then this method would be fine. You may want to mirror cut them so that they can be applied from the inside and get some clear application tape as it makes it easier. Also include some instruction on the application method as it is not quite like peeling the backing off and just sticking them on. You need to clean the window first with IPA and when applying use a proper squeege or an old credit card to apply pressure at an angle to remove all the bubbles.

Many thanks

Equipment used A4 Ricoh printer, HP3085 Heat Press Graphtec cutter, Jarin mug press, CJV 30-60 solvent printer and lots of help from DSF.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yes this is single color lettering, not joined up, I was under the impression that as this is an adhesive vinyl that I wouldn't need application tape, i thought it would be a case of cut the vinyl and the customer could peel it and stick it on their rear window. I spoke to MDP but was a little confused as to whether it was adhesive vinyl or not, sorry if i sound a little stupid, first time doing these. The lettering will be 15mm in height and maybe 30cm long in white, what would you normally charge, he is looking to buy in bulk so could be 10 stickers or 500. I was thinking maybe 50p to 75p each + postage?

I would see how many they are going to order as then you can work out how many you can fit per metre and how much app tape you will need. This can only be bought a a whole roll not per metre. Some vinyl can only be bought as 5m rolls from MDP. I personally use Metamark vinyl which can be bought per metre.

It is adhesive vinyl but once the lettering is cut and weeded the app tape keeps it altogether so it can be applied.

£3.69 per 5 mtr roll, 12 inches wide, text will only be 15mm tall, thinking of cost per sticker with adhesive tape until applied?

This may sound rude, but its not meant to be... the way you are suggesting is a bit Mickey Mouse. If I ordered some internal window stickers in white and I got what you are suggesting I would be a tad peeved. Why not ask some of the forum members for a quote to print static cling in white, they could probably do you a deal and then you are selling your client the real deal and not a work around.

At the prices you are quoting I suspect someone might be able to budget it and leave enough for you to have a margin.

I could do it, but in the interests of fairness I will opt out of quoting as I do not think it fair to tell you to do it a different way and then quote on it :-)

As the client is asking for lettering and not a logo or a fancy design I don't see what is mickey mouse( you have Disney on the brain at the moment from other threads) about vinyl lettering. If it was some lettering with a white background or they wanted a multi coloured design then yes a static cling would be fine. Also if you had the text on cling do you not have the unprinted part of the cling showing? I have never used or seen it so please excuse me if I have got it wrong.
Many thanks

Very funny!

Maybe its me then, I am not a fan of vinyl lettering on windows, I see it a lot and it comes off or peels when something is rubbed over it (when cleaning the glass for example), Static cling is the stuff that people use for car stickers and if you get the right stuff then no it does not show up.

As I say, it maybe just me that doesn't like it and I think it might be quite difficult to apply, but the customer trumps all. If he is happy then we all are ;-)

What about The Magic Touch white toner CL media?

All the customer is looking for is a sticker for his rear window that he will then sell on to his club (car club)

http://www.mdpsupplies.co.uk/cameogloss ... lrolls.asp

Above is the viny (white) that i'm looking to use along with app tape, this will be sent with the cut product, peel and apply with instructions on how to apply the vinyl to the screen, just want it as easy as possible for the customer.

I want to cut the vinyl, weed, apply the tape, post it and the rest is upto the customer, he has said he is ok with me sending application instructions.

so above vinyl, cut it on my cutter, apply app tape, post with instructions.
Never done the car signs before but something I want to get into.

The customer is looking for 15mm high by 25-30cm long, plain white text for rear windscreens.

That's it, cut, weed, app tape, post, job done
I have ran a car club/web site for close on 10 years now, cut vinyl is fine for web banners etc.... car clubs want something they can pass on for little ££
If you use the right vinyl (Oracal 651 from MDP is what I would go for) it will last for years on the outside so no need to worry about members saying it's fell off,
If you're using MDP then 651 will sort you out :) (MDP are not my biggest fans today as they messed an order I was waiting for that I had already booked in for collection to Spain )
But anyway..... easy job and when you have done the web banners, offer sun strips with the club name/web site, alot have them on there rear window and some good profit in it for you
