Computer woes
Re: Computer woes
Last Thursday morning my trusty Dell computer got stuck in a boot up loop and was not playing ball despite many attempts at starting it. Took it to the local repair shop who put it on an emergency repair plan and I was able to track the progress of the work on my phone. Unfortunately after trying everything he could throughout the day, and running a diagnostic program overnight, there was still no joy, but at least it was narrowed down to the hard drive. On Friday morning I decided as well as having a new hard drive, to go for an upgrade to Windows 7 from the XP I had been running, which I knew I would have to do eventually. My main concern was that it seems that Photoshop CS2 would not be compatible with Windows 7 from what I had read. However, luckily this was not the case,as it works fine. I ended up buying a refurbished machine and he made no charge for all the work done on Thurs/Fri (Nice man!)
Over the weekend I had to reload drivers for my 2 sublimation printers, one inkjet and an Oki laser as well as 2 label printers, with varying degrees of success. The main one I had problems with was the SG400 which would not print through powerdriver. After trying many different things including reinstalling the drivers, I finally discovered that the 'enable bidirectional communication' box was not ticked. Did that and all was fine!
Sunday morning was spent trying to get my Breeze order manager program to work. I emailed the company in America and was amazed to get a reply within 30 mins offering to give me remote support. I installed Team Viewer, emailed the codes and within a few minutes my computer was being sorted by the company director in the early hours of the morning his time. 15 mins later and after isolating a couple of files he had the program working again. Fantastic service which I don't think we would see in this country on a Sunday morning.
Tuesday, the laser printer was churning out gobbledegook instead of images (was working fine on Monday) and a reinstall of the drivers sorted that one.
So its been a frustrating few days (and late nights) but at last all seems to be working fine. Have had to get used to Windows live mail instead of the much simpler Outlook Express that I had been used to. Thankfully all my master images, templates etc were backed up on an external hard drive (lesson to us all) although the computer repair man did manage to retain much of what I had on the old hard drive.
It's not until something like this happens that you realise how much you have stored on your machine over time and what a pain it is to do it all again!

I back up all my stuff to the cloud 50Gb for free that way I can access it from anywhere anytime and it does not cost me a penny.

We've got a good collection of old and new Dell machines here, all running strong. Find them easy to strip down, upgrade and repair, and for the ones with warranty, find their next day on site service to be amazing
