I have dabbled with these. To print the cards is easy on thin card; For the cards to look professional then you need to use 300-400gsm cardstock. To print on this you need something like an intec 3000. These are around £4,000+. If want to sell laminated cards then you will need a roll laminator (around £2,000). However the tricky part is in the finish. You need a good card trimmer that cuts through card and laminate to the finished card size. Something like an uchida at £3,000. Then the boxes and /or packaging and then pay the delivery postage.
Or you could use an inkjet with a straight paper path and manually duplex them. Laminate them with a cheap home laminator and cut them with a fleabay card cutter or guillotine. They will look cheap and cost you about 10p each to produce
When you can buy them at £20 a thousand delivered then it makes more sense to be a reseller.
Hot foil cards would be a better bet as this would cost you under £2,000 to get into and is a niche market.
The real secret is to wisdom is to listen to the wise and follow their advice
