Where to get images from

Shutterstock is fine for professionals who may get the full value from the subscription cost but can you get good images elsewhere for less or free without spending hours searching the internet, what does everyone here do who does this sort of thing?

The biggest single issue has to be copyright. Even material in the public domain and described as 'free' in some way or another does not necessarily mean you have the right to reproduce it or publish it. It can become a costly nightmare very rapidly.

A lower cost version to Shutterstock is 123RF and they offer a very extensive range.

Thanks for posting, yes 123RF is a good pay per use alternative, do you use it much? I was just wondering what others do or use aside from their own material. Sometimes you might have an idea but want to find more inspiration somewhere though it's always easier to use something readily available that fits the bill.

with 123RF so you need an extended licence at approx 12x normal licence cost to print on a single mug?tshirt?

With any of the picture libraries it is always worthwhile to give them a call. Talk through what you intend to use the image for and see what can be negotiated.

My experience with 123RF is for producing very large display panels, wallpaper, printed blinds etc. Tends to be a one-off or restricted run so the licence cost is seldom an issue.

I've found that images available for license on one library (i.e. shuttertock) are also available to license from other libraries - the artists/designers want their work as widely available as possible so list it on as many libraries as they can - so Google image search is useful for finding which other libraries have the image you want, and see which offers the best license terms for your intended use.

I use freepik.com who supply images and their copywrite for free. they also supple eps and psd files for direct editing

Have you studied the t&c's for freepik? Commercial use requires attribution in many situations and images must not be used as main or sole content of a design

With care, freepik is a wealth of designs and ideas but, as with everything, the devil is in the detail!

If you're advertising your items for sale online all you do with a load of them is credit them on your site. Nobody actually looks at it lol!
