Cold water dunk or not?

My mug heat press instructions recommend putting the mug straight into cold water to cool after heat pressing. I've been doing this but am now wondering if it's better to just let them cool naturally. Surely instant cooling will put huge strains on the structure of the mug?
What does everyone else do, cold dunk or natural cooling?
