Would photo slates be suitable as a trivet in the kitchen

Hi all

As the title suggests... Would a photo slate be suitable for use as a trivet in a kitchen, for putting hot saucepans/dishes onto? I'm sure they will withstand the heat as they are pressed at 190 degrees, but I'm wondering what would happen to the image if subjected to heat for a prolonged time.

Has anyone ever tried this? If not, I guess he only was is to try!!!

We got asked this a lot, and a lot of our stockists sell them as such - because of this we tested them in our press at 100 degrees C for 5 minutes, and there were no problems with the image blurring, or transferring onto the sheet of paper put above the slate (slate was image side up, with sheet of A4 paper on top - the printed side of the slate was getting the heat.

I am sure the would be fine for putting a kettle or saucepan on - maybe not a chip pan which you can get to a much higher temp than 100c and probably not an oven dish either - metal or ceramic as the temps would potentially be much higher and the heated mass involved larger. Only one way to find out!

I would think that the first problem is with abrasion from the pans so would try using one in anger for a while to see how it puts up with scratches. Also the tiles are fairly brittle so plonking a pan down on top may break them. The tiles are also quite good at conducting heat so placing directly on a table may cause damage. I guess using cork bumpers as standoffs would help but then worry even more about breakage as the base is no longer supported over its full surface.

Could be worrying about nothing of course....

We've certainly not had any returns or complaints from end customers or stockists from this problem, and must have easily shipped thousands of them.

I had planned to do a range of trivets last year, but Gas Marks 6 7 8 are over 200 degrees. None of the suppliers could state that the product would be suitable for higher than normal printing temperatures. Put a mug back into the press at 180 degrees and it will blur.

Thanks for the comments! And yes, GoonerGary, that was my thought too - a mug will start to run a bit. I'm gonna trial one for a few days (even if it does mean I have to do some cooking!)
