Yeah. Saw that myself and gave eBay Customer Support a wee call. Its mainly for selling or reselling retail items, not for custom work - so if you are selling a 3metre HDMI cable yes a barcode is essential. If you are selling a dye sub phone cover... not so much unless its already a major design and lots of people are selling the same item. It's to help sellers fill in the item specifics sections with greater accuracy and for users to search those items.

So if you are selling a DVD of the Hobbit for example, just putting in the barcode would fill out all the sections for you.

Also look out for Product Reviews when the come too.... That's gonna be a good one.... *ahem*

Thanks for that phoenix

It makes a lot of sense

If custom products did need identifiers, unique bar codes wouldn't be searchable

It will come I'm sure that all items on eBay will need a barcode (if you are to fully integrate with eBay systems and achieve best search results) in the not so distant future and yes eBay want to be Amazon soooo badly - mind you spinning off PayPal aint exactly a smart move unless you are part of the eBay board where it will make all the investors oodles of cash as PayPal will integrate with more and more sellers like Amazon.

Wouldn't it be great if eBay grouped all these EAN number products into single listings (just like Amazon) freeing up the search results for unique products.

thought this was interesting
If you sell unbranded items, or items that don’t have product identifier codes, you’ll be able to select ‘Does not apply’ in order to complete your listing.

you don't need ean numbers on amazon if you are part of the brand registry program, we have a about 500t-shirts on there, each with about 50 variations so would have needed 25000 barcodes to list them.. which even at a few pennies a code would add up to more than I would like to spend.

Well a new announcement from eBay soon I think (http://for-business.ebay.com/ebay%E2%80 ... ng-service) - promoted adverts - where your listing is *promoted* by eBay in the listings depending on how much you want to spend - between 1% and 20% of the listing price will see your listing be promoted to the bottom of the first page (and possibly higher). Talk about screwing money from sellers... this will drive more and more sellers away, not bring sellers in.
