Re: Ebay - yet again

Post by arthur.daley »

Could any of the resident fleabay sellers here answer this simple question before I go and spend hours trawling through the small print looking for the relevant paragraph...........

A seller, a private individual, sells a Sony powered ipod docking station but without a power supply. It is described as

“EX-DISPLAY. In original packaging in excellent condition. Item tested and working. MAIN UNIT ONLY”

It makes £10.50 plus £8 postage and packing.

The dock arrives and is plugged into a power supply that has been sold by another ebay vendor (commercial vendor) as being a replacement power supply specifically for the ipod dock in question - dock doesn't work.

Its beginning to look as though the dock is dead. It is tested with another power supply - a lab bench power supply so no doubt over whether or not the power supply works! Once again, not a peep out of the dock.

The vendor of the dock insists that he tested the unit before it was sent. He offers to refund the £10.50 but not the £8 p&p, the buyer can keep the dock.

Hark is that the sound of alarm bells ringing?

According to the ebay rules, I thought the vendor was obliged to pay ALL costs in the event of supplying faulty goods, ie both the £10.50 and the £8 in full. Where as if the buyer changed their mind about wanting the item they would have to stump up the return postage and I am not sure about the vendors postage costs.

It does rather sound to me like the vendor is a bit of a chancer and never tested it in the first place - otherwise why would they offer to give the unit away. He just wants to hang on to the postage as thats something he has paid out for and the dock itself was a single item in a job lot.

Over to you ladies and gentlemen.

open dispute, state the facts, don't get arguey or persona'. Likely ebay will give you prepaid returns postage label for you to take to post office and will issue you full refund once tracking shows it's delivered ... assuming seller doesn't offer full refund first.

but the question remains - what do the 'rules' actually say about refunds and postage?

You don't have to pay for the return costs of faulty goods.
