What glue are you guys using? I'm going to make some lanyards and the only stuff I have seen is £16 a can!

We use 3M 75 Scotch-Weld spray

You only need a very light spray/mist of it, so each can does last, especially if you're doing lanyards - we're using it on metres of fabric at a time.

No idea about over the counter, you'd likely pay more for it from a B&M store though.

I got some re positional adhesive from hobby craft today. Its ok, but like you said you don't need much at all!!

I have been using a method I saw in this video.
I am using grease proof paper to protect the lanyard but sometimes it sticks to my glue and I have to bin it.. is there a better option or am I having this trouble because of my glue?

If using on a t shirt for example does the tshirt need washing after pressing? Is it still sticky? Do you spray it on the fabric or the print?

We spray it on either the fabric or paper - whichever is easier for the job we're doing. The spray leaves a residue if used on hard substrates unfortunately, but is not noticeable on fabric so doesn't need washing out.
I expect that you're having problems with the stuff from Hobby Craft, as you're not just needing re-positionable adhesive spray - it needs to be OK with the heat in the heat press, which is one of the properties of the 3M spray we use.
There is spray sold specifically for sublimation work, but this appears to be quite generic cans that have been rebranded, so I would rather just buy the original product, without paying a surcharge for it saying "sublimation" on the can.

Have a look at 505 Adhesive. It's designed for temporary gluing of paper and fabric. No residue.

It's not just repositionable spray adhesive that's needed, it need to be OK with the heat from a heat press - does the 505 do this? - the 3M 75 is designed for high temp work. The 505 seems about the same price per ml as the 75, so why not get the 75?
