I do chuckle at this. This particular mug has a different image printed on both sides hence two mugs are used in the image. The title uses the word "Mug" not "Mugs". The beginning of the description says in large bold characters that the offer is for one mug. Hundreds of these mugs have been sold across the internet with the same images and text. But I found Mr A Hole. Who sends me this...

Hello, I consider this item as mis-sold as in all the pictures in the post there are two mugs, I expected to receive two mugs but I was obviously mis-led. I can see three possible outcomes to this, 1, You supply a second mug free of charge, 2, I return the mug and you refund my initial payment a return postage costs, 3, I return the mug, I pay postage and I leave extremely negative feedback.
Up to you, please let me know,
Best regards,

My reply was quite polite

Sorry to hear it is causing you so much distress.
I note though that you pass no comment that the title says "mug" not "mugs" , plus the description clearly points out that the offer is for one mug, and that two are shown to enable you to see both sides of the mug. The other photo's are there for you to see the mugs that are printed on. Your third point is rather interesting in that you obviously don't agree with the ebay policy that you agree to when using ebay, plus ebay regard the "Do this..... or I leave negative feedback" as extortion and is also against ebay policy.
I raise these points not to be "smart" or "confrontational" but to help your buying process be less stressful. Follow the ebay guidelines.
eg
1/ Always read the description
2/ If you buy through ebay you accept their rules (note not my rules)
3/ Ebay monitor all correspondence and will pick up on what they regard as extortion as highlighted above, this can result in you being banned from ebay (check their policies if in doubt)

As a gesture of goodwill I shall send you another mug as it does appear to have caused you such a high level of distress and I hope your future purchases on ebay bring you great joy.

And I did of course report him, although I doubt ebay will do anything.

Why can't we just shoot the stupid?

Nice reply Janners and a little generous on the extra mug....... but I guess that's ebay and the customer holding all the cards.

Love your response Janners but there is no way I would send a free mug, but instead I would have just thrown abuse his way (note I do not work with the public!!!!)

I do sell stuff on ebay, all pretty much low key etc. and if I receive negative feedback like this I would hi-light the feedback in the item description so that potential buyers know why there is negative feedback and understand that it is the buyer who was/is at fault.

I came from 25 years of running my own cars sales business where minor problems cost £100, average problems cost £100s and major problems could be £1000s. Hence my amusement over people getting upset over a mug.
Often a step back and a little perspective would make life far less stressful for individuals......but I still think shooting idiots is a good idea!

I would have replied quoting him ebays feedback extortion policy, then informed ebay.
[h=3]What are the guidelines?[/h]

Image
Allowed

Examples that aren't Feedback extortion
 • Buyer says they will leave negative Feedback or low DSRs unless the seller accepts a return, the return postage is paid for as set out in the seller's listing policy, and this takes place within the period of seller's return policy.
 • Buyer pays for the item and waits several weeks for it to arrive. The buyer then tells the seller that if the item doesn't arrive by a certain date, they will leave negative Feedback or low DSRs.
 • Buyer receives an item that is significantly not as it was described in the original listing and asks for a refund within a reasonable period of time, but possibly after the seller's return policy has expired.

Examples of Feedback extortion
 • Seller refuses to post the item or refund the buyer unless the buyer leaves positive Feedback or good DSRs.
 • Seller refuses to let a buyer use a manufacturer or retailer warranty included in the listing unless the buyer leaves positive Feedback or good DSRs.
 • Buyer threatens to leave negative Feedback or low DSRs unless they get a full or partial refund for an item, without posting the item back to the seller.
 • Buyer feels the postage & packaging (P&P) costs are too high and says they will leave negative Feedback or low DSRs unless the seller lowers the P&P costs.
 • Buyer threatens to leave negative Feedback or low DSRs unless the seller sends an extra item that wasn't part of the original listing (unless the buyer wants a replacement for an item they're not satisfied with).

I used to get this quite often, I was selling 'Software' which was given even before purchase (Free Trial Download).

Customer would see my listing on eBay and download the trial Version, like it (they must have done as to buy was £9.95 as my Mugs are) and then pay.

I would then send a hard copy on CD in the post - customer would enter the Activation Code I sent after payment (Via email and ebay message system) which unlocked the software on that particular machine (I would almost always unlock use on another machine upon reasonable request).

I created a 'Mock-Up' Box to make my listing a bit more professional but always had 'Product Box is for Illustration purposes only' in text under it.. you can guess what followed from the customer.. time after time - I gave up.
