Soooo..... hyperbole? Methinks not. Today Adobe just killed every creative industry worldwide with it's launch of the new "CS" aka Creative Cloud Suite aka turn on the money taps for Adobe.

In short : No more updated Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, Dreamweaver et all.... No more using the package on your Mac/PC, its all cloud based now and more importantly it's all subscription service. Ranging from $30 to $50 per month per computer you have to pay Adobe to be able to use your software. No more development for Adobe unless you cough up the cash up front. New must have tool for your company? Nope unless you open your wallet. New Mac/PC? Cant buy the old version, must upgrade to cloudy based services. No internet connection? No play.

Yes this is where Adobe, now that they have the creative world by the short and curlies, get to rape your wallets and purses. Today is that day.

it'll stop them being raped for the development they spend and all the pirate copies out there. If you owned Adobe - you'd do it too.

Clever move. I do believe Cloud is the way forward. At least you can pay monthly for your software All be it far more than paying annually I see!

I believe this too. It may work out slightly dearer but for those that can't splash out hundreds of pounds it makes it far more obtainable. I once read somewhere that over 70% of Photoshop users are using it illegally... so it makes sense for them to do this.

Also not sure if you've misunderstood pheonixalpha - you don't actually use the programs on the internet in a browser they're still downloaded to your computer and run like the old versions... it just connects to the cloud to authenticate and enable the cloud features. We are currently subscribed to the creative cloud since February of this year and can't wait for the new updates

Yeah, chill out, it's a new version of creative suite, just you can only buy/use it by paying monthly a small amount, rather than paying an extortionate amount every year or so.
We're currently using Photoshop CS6 through this subscription basis (and have been for over a year now) and are more than happy at being able to budget for the software in this way.

I really cant believe people pay *as in cloud based subscription* for CS (which I use daily on three or four mac/pcs - and yes I have legit licences for all them). I always thought the constant upgrades weren't worth the cost of CS but I constantly upgraded my software because I couldn't be left behind if people supplied files in newer versions of ID, PS or Illustrator - its embarrassing and you lose a lot of customers if you cant handle newer file types.

But really? $50 pm per licence per computer. At the moment I'm looking at $150 (plus personal licence of $50 - so $200) per month for the mac/pc's I have/use. So that's $3000 per year I HAVE to fork out to Adobe, whether I like it or not. If I chose not to update my copies it would cost nowt. I'm not beholden to upgrade every time - but now I'm forced to cough up every month, like clockwork or my business goes under - immediately. Cant work if you don't have access to software. Adobe seem to now be running a protection racket.... give us the dough on a monthly basis or yer gonna be sleeping w' da fishes.....

I'm sure there are lots of people who use earlier versions of CS and I'm sure from now on in, it will be this way for a lot of people.

Yes they run like the old versions but if you don't cough up, Adobe will switch you off. If you're internet is *down* during this period (as I'm sure we've all had this once or twice) yer business is down too as it wont load up if you don't get that monthly pat on the head.

I have only just upgraded to CS5 and did look into the subscription service.. but as a small outfit couldn't possibly guarantee the outlay every month.. so where do people like us stand in the future ?

We don't. Its either stagnate with the current version as the end of the line for standalone copies from now on, or migrate to the AdobePayCloudWhereWeTakeAllYourMoney (TM pending).

We all run different business models, and while I enjoy using a newer version of software, I do find it VERY difficult to financially justify the upgrade cost, so while they still work, I will mostly use old versions of PS that I know inside out, instead of having a zillion new features that I don't know how to control.....
If you offer a high end design service, you can justify the outlay, if you mostly crop & resize, adjust levels, bit of clone/brush up, clean up backgrounds or make transparent, you can use any PS from the last 10+ years and they run like stink on new computers.
Never been convinced in having the latest software, - more of a hardware man me!
