I meant to post this ages ago and keep forgetting :(

I know there are 100's of ready made templates out there for sublimation items but sometimes a template isn't available or cannot be found.

If you have a scanner, and if the item is flat(ish) then place it in the scanner with something dark over it like a black t-shirt.

Scan it at true scale (usually 300dpi in photoshop) to give you a prefect 'to scale' scan of the item which you can then use to make sure your image will cover the item (and also delete some of the printing area if it's not required to save ink).

Hope that helps someone :)

Or you can use a tape measure (or ruler) to find out how big the printable area is, and then create a new blank image in PS that's a bit bigger than these dimensions, or crop/resize your existing artwork to the desired size.

I always used to do this but I had a weird heart shaped mouse-mat a couple of months ago and no internet connection to look for a template. I created a love heart in photoshop and printed it to see if it would fit and it was a weird shape that I had trouble replicating. I needed it exact as the customer wanted a border running around the inside of the mat.

I placed it in the scanner, covered it with a black t-shirt and scanned it at 300dpi for a to scale template - worked a treat :)

But, as you say - if the item is a general shape then just creating the same sized shape with a bleed is less time consuming and works just as well.
