I have a mug template PSD and have put a photo in the frame, but cant for the life of me figure out how to get rid of the rest of the photo its sticking out the top and bottom.

As the gimp uses layers you need to send the photograph back a layer or two I would imagine. Look for a menu setting that says 'to front', 'to back' or 'back a layer' or similar as I would imagine that may solve your issue.

Or jist drag it down in layer window.
