Could any one please tell me how to make a background of a picture transparent, so it can be used on top of other images etc as a layer

Somehow I managed to do it once, but I can't remember how I managed to do it.

Thanks for any help you can give

If you've got an image Christie the easiest thing to do is duplicate the layer (i.e duplicate the image) so you now have the same image 1 on top of the other.

Then turn off the bottom layer and work on the top - you should be able to delete the background using the tools available ?
