X5 for me. Personally I would always go for the latest version you can afford.

I found that the latest version didn't really have anything different that I needed. Probably could have got away with a slightly older version but I guess it all depends on your budget. I would generally agree that latest version is a good option but having used X4 for ages it's tried and tested for me

I think you make an excellent point justin and if you are used to something it usually needs two updates or more to make it worth while in changing. As I started with X5 I can't compare it with x4 but I doubt I will buy X6 but will more than likely buy X7. Its just like computer OS's TBH most people I know skipped every other one, you had 98, xp, win 7 and skipped millennium and vista (not just because they were shite lol) but its a lot of cash to shell out with very little improvement on the last.
I have the adobe suite aswell went from CS3 to CS5, CS4 had no real benefits over CS3 but CS5 was a good improvement over CS3

im on X4 at the moment, and would not recommend getting earlier, as i know one of the newer things is the mouse zoom function, on older versions you had to zoom in by clicking a size if that makes sense, i know as one of my computers has x2 on it

X4, didn't think there was that much difference from version 12, maybe the trace function is better but for artwork, and what I use it for, there's very little difference.
mouse zoom function
I actually prefer clicking on the magnifying glass and then drawing a box around the item I want to zoom in to, I think you have more control doing it that way - or I'm an old fart stuck in me ways.

I upgraded from V4 to V5 as V4 would not allow me to import some eps files.
