I've had a few of these in the past few weeks Brett. It is a big scam as they infect your computer with some hidden software & then charge you around £250 to remove it. I was told this by someone at Virgin Media & he said a few people had fallen for it.

If I get calls like this I ask them for their full company name & address & contact phone number so I can call them back & everytime they hang up straight away.

Love your telephone patter, purpledragon.

I've read about this kind of thing elsewhere and about someone who kept them on the phone for almost 45 minutes. The phone call was apparently from someone associated with Microsoft who wanted to help him because they'd seen that his computer had a virus. The "victim" was a savvy guy, so he just strung them along. He followed all their instructions, visting websites, but he couldn't get it to work. He made out that he was the thickest tool in the box.

Finally he "managed" to download an .exe file to his computer and was told to double-click it to install the software. He double-clicked it but nothing happened. He told the guy on the phone that nothing happened. The guy insisted that it should and that he should double-click it again. Then right-click it...

...then the victim asked "is it supposed to work on Linux?"

I thought that was so funny. The scammer just assumed that he was using Windows, and even affiliated himself with Microsoft at the start of the call.

Needless to say, the phonecall ended after about 40+ minutes. Hate to think what that cost them.

yep, mum had the call a few days ago, said that its impossible for you to have access to my computer, but if you hold on i will go start it up for you, she then just left the phone for 20 mins and they were gone when she went back.

i guess for the cost of calls if they get a success rate of 1 per 100 calls they are onto a winner
