Hi all,
I have the chance to run a small stall (car boot type - paste table) at a very popular tourist destination where there'll be good traffic most of the day so hopefully sales would be good. My problem is I'm vat registered so in theory, I have to issue a vat invoice with every purchase. I'm not taking a computer, or printer, so has anybody done a show/event like this and how do you get round the invoice problem.
Cheers John

Surely you only have to issue a VAT invoice if the people purchasing require one? Chip shops are VAT registered but I don't get a VAT receipt

I don't eat many chips either

No, I think by law, if you are vat reg, you have to issue an invoice regardless of whether the customer asks for it or not. It has to show their address/contacts, your address, item description & vat number etc. Just wondering if anybody on the forum does shows and is vat reg.

Don't think so John. There's some sort of exemption for cash sales as you'd expect to make in shows & the like. I'll leave you to research the HMRC system

If you're not taking the pc setup, I presume you're not offering personalised goods as well then?

These are quotes from the HMRC website...

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vat/start/schemes/retail.htm
"If you sell to the general public, especially high quantities of relatively inexpensive items, it can be difficult, time-consuming and costly to record the VAT on every individual sale in your accounts. There are several VAT accounting schemes that retailers can use instead of accounting for VAT in the standard way. These can help simplify your retail VAT accounting."

When a VAT invoice must be issued
"If you are registered for VAT you must give any VAT-registered customers a VAT invoice for any standard-rated or reduced-rated goods or services you sell them.

If you are a retailer, you do not need to issue a VAT invoice or receipt unless your customer asks for one.
As a VAT-registered supplier, you may be liable to a fine if you do not issue a VAT invoice for a supply you have made when asked to do so by a VAT-registered customer.
There is a time limit within which VAT invoices must be issued – see the section in this guide on time limits for issuing VAT invoices."
Think about it - When was the last time you got a VAT receipt from a retailer for your normal groceries?

An option is to use a duplicate invoice book.

Why not get a stamp made up with your co name, address and VAT number. Then on the paperwork you give the customer you can just stamp your details on it. You'll need to show ex vat, vat and total amount I believe on the paperwork.
