Let me know how you get on with them, Justin!
I've just "invested" in a couple of refillable carts for my old 1290S to try and resurrect it.
I replaced the 1290S with my 1400 about a year ago, and it's been sitting idle ever since. It's CIS has seen better days and I don't really want to drag year-old ink through the printheads, so I've got myself a couple of refillables which I'm going to experiment with.
If it works, I'll be considering something similar for my 1400 (having spent half of today wrestling with an annoying Cyan line). I may even consider something like that for my R1800 (not dye-sub, though).

My 1400 CIS has been mostly fine although just recently it's required an extra head clean before firing up and today was, as always, a minor incident made into a disaster by virtue of an urgent order that needed getting out.
These things make you think that some kind of backup is in order and if I can get my 1290S using refills rather than a CIS, then it won't be sitting there with ink drying out for the next year 'til the next time the 1400 conks out. Having refills will make it easier to chuck the ink if it's old and top up with fresh stuff. That's my thinking.
I've bought two sets in case I don't get the hang of refilling in situ (I could fill one and swap if necessary). I have sufficient of all inks (except black) to put in the carts, and I daresay I could nick a bit of black from my 1400's CIS for the time being.
The alternative is a full backup system costing a minimum of £400 just for whatever printer and CIS is the flavour of the month today, which will then sit there with £300 of ink drying out for the next 12 months and will have been discontinued by Epson and abandoned by Sawgrass by the time I need to use it.
If only suppliers could sell a "light" package - a CIS with just enough Artanium ink to get you going, costing no more than £100, then that'd be a viable alternative for a backup system. But with Sawgrass ink being so ludicrously expensive, it makes a backup system just unaffordable.

Very cheap and they can't confirm if it's auto reset chip.
I'm taking onboard Martins advice and I'll invest in a glue gun to make sure everything is well sealed
