Re: MDP Mug Press set up help please!

Post by gem »

Hi everyone,

I asked in here a short while ago about mug press recommendations and decided to get the touch screen mug press recommended by a few people. It's arrived today and I'm just setting it up. It came with the mug element and I have mugs from MDP here too. The press seems very difficult to open and close so I have loosened the pressure. I tried a mug in there (before switching it on) and when I closed the press, the mug handle popped off  I've loosened it a bit more! That mug can now be my sacrificial mug for me to put in there when it is heating up! Don't think I can loosen it much more as the nut is now right at the end of the pressure screw. Is this normal? How do I know when I've got the right pressure? I'm guessing handles flying off is not a good thing! I had an old style Freesub press before and used to do mugs for 180 secs at 180 degrees. I'm guessing this is the same on this press? Also, does anyone know how close I'll be able to get to the handle without fading?

Thanks in advance, Gem

Hello again,

I've loosened the pressure knob so much that the screw isn't actually touching the bracket holding the heat element, but my mugs are still having the handles popping off :( The press came with a C element and I am using MDP Orca mugs. It says on the MDP website that these mugs need a C element, which is the one in the press so I can't understand why they are breaking :(

Any advice please?

Are you sure you have the mug placed correctly in the press?

If the handle comes up against a hard edge of the press it can pop the handles off - make sure your handles are sitting centrally in the gap once the press is closed

Can you post some images of the press with a mug inside.
it sounds like you have an incorrect element.

I have never had a single handle pop off.
I have added two videos to my press review post have a look at those and check your doing the same.
