So i'm a complete newbie to sublimation, i recently purchased a mug press from MDP and have an issue with getting a consistent solid colour. I use a Sawgrass 500 and design on Illustrator everything seems good till i press this solid red colour then lines appear, vertical and horizontal, currently pressing at 190 for 60 seconds, i've wasted so many mugs trying to get this right and am running out of ideas :frown:. Any advice welcome?

Reality, solid colours like you're doing are not possible with sublimation. Near impossible to get perfect print let alone consistent temperature and pressure on mug press. We learnt years ago to say no to artwork using large solid areas of dark colours. This in my opinion would only be an option using a completely different print process like decal application and kiln firing.

This is why most of our designs have a textured or brushstroke effect background - get way less rejects and 2nds products as the imperfections aren't as noticable.
Hate doing production for other companies when they give us solid block colours or white backgrounds!

Think things quickly escalated after i posted this have now tried using a different mug press and using a friends Sawgrass and still getting inconsistent results. Heres the aftermath :frown:. I think i'm coming to the conclusion that you are both right .

Slight correction to what has been said on here...

Solid colours are perfectly possible with sublimation but using a different technique. To get good solid colours with zero lines/light spots plus the ability to print edge to edge (consistently), 8mm from the handle, and even the handle itself you need to use an oven. Trying solid colours in mug presses will not work due to how the heat is "applied". An oven gives an all over even temperature that you can never achieve with mug presses.

If you are doing low volumes you can use one of those halogen type ovens and there are plenty of posts about these. I personally use a large convection oven due to the higher numbers required.

I need to print some mugs today with a solid green. If I get chance I will post pics of what you can achieve

Just a little update, i have now tried multiple printers and presses and still not getting perfect results but i have been in contact with the technical team at Sawgrass who have run some tests and advised me for this particular colour to change all my settings on the Print Manager to get the results i need (images below of the settings they suggested), This has taken a few attempts at getting this right however although not completely perfect it is good enough to go with for now. fingers crossed for my run of 36 cups...
