Interested to hear what options folk use in shops, market stalls etc. for tills/card payments.
Obviously there's the traditional till and card payment machines but I see epos systems on eBay that seem to offer a lot for the money.
I need to be able to accept cash and cards, may have to rely on mobile signal for card payments.

not sure if it’s what your after ?
I haven’t used one for a while but I was using izettle which was great.
my wife was using a Barclays card machine on her business, but the costs were stupid and the machine would constantly fail to connect and cost sales.
I hear good things about square which is one I would look into If I needed to use one now.

Just a quick addition.
I use stripe for my website payments and they do a card terminal for pos which might be worth looking at too.

Thanks. I do like the look of Square hadn't realised the options available there.

We have proper card terminals for our shops ... one is ethernet, the other GPRS/2G, so can take it to events.
Both of these are through Elavon/SagePay who also do the main payment gateway on our website.

My daughter is opening a shop and has just received the keys. She has bought an EPOS system, as shown below, together with an additional 10.1" customer display screen

She has also bought a SumUp card reader with printer

The card reader is great and can be used on the likes of a market stall using your mobile as the wi-fi connection. Very handy having the receipt printer.
The POS system uses the excellent LOYVERSE software which is free (apart from additional features which she will never require).

I use Sumup for card payment(before that I used Paypal).
The reason I swapped to sumup is because
1/ Interest is lower
2/Payouts are directly into my bank, not a paypal account or a merchant account with the banks card supplier
3/Payouts are quicker than bank supplied terminals
4/Ability to send online invoices
The main reason is that the larger Sumup machine doesn't need to be paired to an Android app (in my experience every time I needed to take a PP payment I had to log back in, which was a pain). It logs straight into your sumup a/c using its own sim card or your wifi. The smaller sumup machine still needs an android app, so can be a pain.
Cash sales go into the drawer in my desk or into a money belt when I am on a show, and a daily total is recorded in the sales book (perfectly legal). If you have a til or epos system record keeping is far more onerous. Till rolls, x and z readings must be kept and over rings must be accounted for.
For a small business/one man band I don't see any point in keeping any more records for cash sales than you are legally obliged to - unless you have to rely on unsupervised staff, where a til/epos is added security against 'shrinkage'.

WE use VEND as our EPOS - partners great with Xero and Stripe.
Card processing is with barclays merchant services, - including monthly hire, works out just under 1.5% which is cheaper than iZettle which we have as a backup - never needed - or for roadshows.
VEND is well worth a look, - especially due to scale pricing, - ie auto discounts when volume peaches certain bands

My brother-in-law runs his own fencing business and sells tons of timber as a sideline (boards, rails, posts, decking etc.). He uses a SumUp 3g in the yard and it is subjected to all kinds of abuse yet has never let him down.
