Had a letter today from ico.org.uk (we don't think this is a scam) asking that we register to pay a data protection fee of £40 per year (no VAT).

There are certain businesses which are exempt but we can't work out if we are.

We have less than 10 employees, and sell only through eBay, Amazon and Etsy. Does anyone know if we need to register and pay?

Thanks

Ray

Is this because you are running a charity, Ray, where the fee is fixed at £40?

No, it's my company that's involved and that's the name the letter was addressed to. I am a trustee and commitee member of the charity but don't think that's got anything to do with it.

Thanks,

Ray

Q8 on their checklist lets me off the hook. Only handling data for core business reasons.

[h=2]You are under no requirement to pay a fee[/h] You are only processing personal data for the core business purposes. You therefore do not have to pay a fee to the ICO.
However, it is important that your organisation adheres to the principles of the General Data Protection Regulations and understands best practice for managing information.

Interessting to note that any business with a CCTV system has to pay.
