Subject says it all really.

Most of the stuff I've seen printed with a 3D printer seems to be novelty things - cartoon characters like Batman or mobile phone stands that can be purchased for pennies.

So, do they have any practical use?

I haven't got one, but I suppose they're handy for doing one-off's of broken parts that can't be easily replaced. Many RC modellers use 3D printed parts too. If I needed anything I'd probably just design it myself and upload it to one of the many online sites to have it made in my preferred material.
