Hi all

I'm not sure where else to put this question, apologies if this is the wrong place.

I have a client who wanted embroidery on hoodies but not on performance t-shirts as it chafed on the inside. fair enough. so we got woven badges made that we are going to heat press onto the t-shirts.

we've just tried one on a normal t-shirt first, to check pressure, time, etc. the company were not good with instructions, in that they didn't send any... we phoned and asked and were told high heat for 30 seconds

so we tried 170c for 20 seconds and this is the result

the 'glue' and whatever seem to be leaking out?? is this a pressure issue? should it be harder pressure?

we had an issue earlier with vinyl onto gymsacs, where it looks like the white backing on the vinyl has been pressed out. we thought this was due to too much pressure and so we made it lower. the vinyl did say to use medium but it did this.

so we tried the same pressure for the t-shirt with the result above. so now i'm wondering if it's because there is not enough pressure?!

it's great when things work but frustrating when stuff like this happens!!

any help is much appreciated.

Not enough pressure - I think you may find it is too much, for the patches make sure you have something absorbent on the underside to take the extra glue which may come out, and place a clean tea towel over the patch itself, personally i would be on about 155/165 for about 6-8 seconds. if you are going to scrap that top anyway - top tip, cut it up now into segments, so you can test print it. also cut a patch up so you can again test press it again. Pressure on those gym sacks looks far too high as well, you are squeezing your stuff to death. Ease up on 3 things, temp, time and pressure.

thanks for the reply.

the bags, we adjusted the pressure so it was lighter, we moved it and tested again, but white kept showing. we got to the stage where the platen was barely touching the vinyl/bag. i don't understand this since the vinyl said medium pressure at 170c for 20 seconds. granted going lighter pressure did decrease the white showing. also, the picture of the yellow vinyl on green bag, that was using a pillow in the pad, saw this as a recommendation to save melting the drawstrings, so obviously put extra pressure on.
here is more of the sample attempts, the parts cut off at the left and right (for some reason the pic is rotated) were with the lightest pressure, certainly an improvement over the first pic above, lol!!

as for the tops, we have tried the badges on scrap tops (scrap bag as well), we've not wasted anything, we have extra badges, thankfully!!

we are using a teflon sheet on top of the t-shirt/badge. no glue is coming through on the underside, but i will certainly double check that, thanks for the tip.

we recently made embroidered patches ourselves and put the sticky backing on, and then onto polo shirts, with no issues, so not sure why we are having such issues with these woven badges!!
we (it's my dad and i) spoke about it after i posted this, we decided to try a lower temperature, but thought even lower than what you suggested, however, since you have suggested a lower time also, i will start off with your suggestion and go from there. the company (badgebase) said to heat on both sides, as the glue is attracted to the heat, so by turning over it should adhere better. would you do the same time on both sides, then? so it's about 15 seconds total press time??

thanks again for the help.
