I don't usually make expensive second hand purchases but thought i'd be ok with an Adkins that was about 5 years old. Set it up and it started showing 'heat fault' within two days. Adkins have suggested a service (£250+vat) and possibly a new controller (£109+vat) and carriage £60. Press cost £600.
I've asked the seller if I can return the press but not sure if he'll take it back (haven't looked into ebay/paypal refund policies, will do that later).
Has anyone had a similar problem?
Thanks

Phoned up Adkins, they were very helpful. Have tweaked around a bit. Might get it working again but don't want to risk a future fault so thinking to return and buy new?

Adkins service will make it like new. I know it is more money, but you will still end up paying LESS than new, and get a fully serviced machine that works like new

That's a shame. As logobear says it would make sense to have it 'sorted' and will be as good as new but cheaper.
I wonder if you could negotiate with the seller and get him to refund some of your money? Half maybe? You don't get if you don't ask. personally I'd be looking to pay around half that if I'd known it was faulty.

Small world - the lovely person at Adkins actually ended up being the one who had serviced the machine when new. I agree with you there Justin - let's see what happens. I'll update soon!
