Re: Ricoh 7100. How to connect via ethernet caable?

Hey guys,

I'm not sure this is possible, but can I connect my Ricoh 7100 direct to my PC via a CAT5/Ethernet cable?

I'm sick of having to disconnect my laptop from the external monitor, power etc to take it over to where the Ricoh lives as the USB cable is too short. Yesterday I found a stupidly long Ethernet cable and notice that both my laptop and the Ricoh have Ethernet connections. This would be ideal, but will it work? Nothing's happening when I plug it in, so maybe needs some fettling?

Yes, I'm well aware that I could just order a longer USB cable :) But I'd rather use what I have if possible as the 66km Ethernet cable is just wasting space at the moment.

Thanks

Buy a USB extension cable. I think you will be multiplying your problems by trying to connect by ethernet.

I think you're right. Couldn't get it working using UK Printed Mugs's link. Life's too short :)

I've done issues with longer USB extension cables. A cheap power line adapter might be a good option?

USB is generally fine up to about 3 metres. Above that the signal integrity and strength start to have issues. You can overcome this using active USB extension cables of 3, 5 or 10 meters in length with your existing short printer cable for the printer connection.

I have also in the past used cat5e cable on long lengths with USB adapters at each end.
