Shouldn't be any need to clean first, decent mugs will be bagged to keep them dust free.

I just spit on them and polish it off with my hankie!

Nah. I give them a quick wipe with a soft towel just to remove any specks, fine hairs or fibres. I also give the transfer a quick blow as well before applying it.

I always run my finger down the mug, removes dust and helps find dents and ripples in the ceramic before pressing.

I rub them over with a soft cloth after sublimating too, when they have cooled down, as sometimes a fine residue is left and you can feel it when you wipe them with the cloth.
