Hi,
Would anyone know the legalities of using a word with definition as laid out in a dictionary. Local dialect or slang words with the description seems to be popular on mugs. I'm curious if anyone knows the copyright ins and outs. Wondering if they would be considered in the public domain.

Thanks in advance

If you're copy/pasting the words as written from a dictionary, you'd best check what the copyright details are in that dictionary ... I would guess that they are free to use for reference/educational purposes, but not for commercial gain.

Yes, we would agree. Better to email them (oed.uk@oup.com) and ask first.

Unless you can track down a copyright free dictionary - maybe one online?
Fairly easy to copy the form of how a dictionary definition is written to create your own - use a few dictionaries for reference.
