Re: Printing a circle on a cup.

Post by twinx05 »

Hi,

i have been printing some round badges onto a few mugs,
although the design is a perfect circle on photoshop, when i print it onto the cup the circle always looks narrow and imperfect on the designs.

DO you usually have to make the dimensions wider as not to make the image look to narrow.

I am printing the images onto 11oz mugs at 8.5cm high.

Has anyone any tips or the dimensions for the perfect printing circle ?

Thanks in advance.file:///Users/jasontwibell/Desktop/IMG_3515.jpg

I've done similar in the past and altered the dimensions to reduce the height by 5 or 10mm to allow for this. Will look a little strange onscreen but worth a go.

hi,

thanks for that.

Did you only reduce the height and leave the width at the original size ?

All it is i don't want to be wasting cups trying to get the dimensions to look right, you know how it is....

Yes, just the height or everything will be the same :-). You're just allowing for the curve of the mug.

Try printing one off and just wrap it around the mug without printing, you'll soon see if its working without wasting mugs.

Hi everyone, very new to all of this and gaining a wealth of information. Thanks to all the contributors for saving me hundreds if not thousands of pounds in experimentation. It makes the £10 membership a no brainier for anyone thinking about it.

Twinx05, years ago I was involved in flexographic label printing. Because the printing plates were mounted on a cylinder the image printed on the label became elongated. We therefore had to distort the image (squash it a bit) to compensate. I would imagine the same is true for artwork on mugs. I can't remember the formula but it's relative to the diameter of the mug. Perhaps one of our fellow forum members can elaborate. If I can find any of the stuff I used to do I'll post again.
